Fillings are intended to repair a chip or cavity for many years. If one falls out, the exposed tooth enamel could suffer a fracture or come to harbor a new area of tooth decay. This makes timely treatment critical to prevent further complications. In many cases, the loss of the filling compromises so much tooth enamel that a dental crown is needed to effectively repair the tooth.
Your dentist, Dr. John Bosak, Jr., will examine the tooth to assess the severity of the decay. If the decay has penetrated the pulp or root of the tooth, a root canal might need to be performed. Then, he will use a drill to remove the tooth enamel layer. This leaves behind a post-like abutment that encases the pulp and root of the tooth.
A detailed impression will be made of the area. This will be sent to our dental lab where your final crown will be made. Then, a hard, plastic, temporary crown will be cemented over the abutment to protect it.
We will call you to schedule a follow-up appointment when your new crown is ready. This appointment will be brief as the temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented into place.
